Hinting differs from that of Google Fonts API version #9

The bower package of Roboto font-face appears to have different (subjectively, inferior) hinting than the version hosted by Google on their Fonts API.

Using "roboto-fontface": "~0.2.5" on Bower and http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=RobotoDraft:regular,bold,italic,thin,light,bolditalic,black,medium&lang=en for API (I assume "RobotoDraft" is an internal name)

Comparison

Thanks for contribution.

I am not exactly sure what the intention of this issue is. Both, Roboto and RobotoDraft exist on the Google Font API and both link to different font files. Does the font files from this package differ from the ones hosted under Roboto at Google Fonts? Or is it just, that you like RobotoDraft more than Roboto?

Please elaborate this issue a bit more.

Just noted, there is a new version of roboto see here. Does your issue have to do with this?

(Update): Looks like, what is now called RobotoDraft is the new version of Roboto (the difference in the capital R is a very obvious change that can be noticed in your screenshots and in the article I linked above).

RoyCurtis commented 9 years ago

My bad, that is pretty confusing. I was playing with a Polymer sample (similar can be found here) and made an incorrect assumption about "RobotoDraft", not realizing they kept it separate from "Roboto".

I believe the blog post you found is the version I am referring to in the issue. Unfortunately, it does not seem to clarify whether these changes will become "Roboto" or be kept separate as "RobotoDraft".

In that case, I suppose this issue is invalid unless or until Google plan to push the changes to Roboto or, if you wanted to, have this package use RobotoDraft. Not sure how package users would feel about that though.

Could you find out some more about the "new" Roboto font?

RoyCurtis commented 9 years ago

Sure; I have done some digging around. As mentioned before, the new Roboto is available through the API but not in any public or official capacity (it doesn't show up on Google Fonts).

There is an interesting discussion on a Google repo about using the new Roboto. As linked on that issue, there is a download of the new Roboto (I have checked for myself; it has the newer "R") but it is all in TTF format. There is no licensing/usage information in the zip or on the typography page for this newer version. Note also, the TTF files are named "Roboto" and not "RobotoDraft".

That is all the additional information I could find

Then I would like to close this issues for now. As long as there is no "official" source for the new Roboto font together with proper licensing information, I will not update this package.

If you (or someone else) finds an official source, then please reopen this issue and we can look at it again.

Roboto was updated on Google Fonts on January 14, 2015. Perhaps it is time to reopen this issue?

Will have a look at it soon. Or if anyone likes to supply an PR, go for it :)

choffmeister commented 9 years ago

This issue has been solved by #12.

choffmeister commented 9 years ago

When looking at the PR #12 you can see, that all font files have been replaced. The old version has been discarded, and the current version from https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Roboto January 14 2015 has beed added under the name "Roboto".
