Workshop
Description
Maintaining Privacy Across Multiple Online Identities examines the way different social groups experience privacy differently based on factors of culture, race, class, and gender. The workshop will start with a presentation, outlining the different mechanisms and types of identity management, and how different identities and their associated axes of oppression affect individuals’ identity management online.
We’ll facilitate a discussion after the presentation, addressing participants’ online privacy needs and how they change across different online spaces. These online spaces may include online communication platforms, social networks, e-commerce sites, or government sites. Then, we’ll break into small groups to brainstorm and design user experiences that would have supported them better in these scenarios. Participants will pick a scenario based on their past online experiences and generate storyboards and diagrams illustrating what their ideal online privacy experience. By revising past negative experiences, participants will create new personal understandings of online privacy and identity management.
