I've spent so much time and some tears as well to make this work that I have to put it here so others can learn from it.

The readme currently is broken. If you want to use the theme as a remote theme on github pages, do the follwoing:

Fork the repo
as remote_theme put your username and the repo name, not chrisbobbe
Make sure not the have base_url set in your config as this will make github pages assume that your whole project is under that folder, which it isn't.
