In VMWare for your virtualization settings, go to the networking settings and
change
a few options. For wifi sharing in the VM do not use NAT to share the IP host
address. Just simply use the bridge option without replicating the physical
networking state. It may require you to redo your VM but its worth it to check
it
out. Give some results to let me know if this worked properly for you.

It still won't work, when I go into wireless controls on android it says that

unable to start wifi

That fix didn't work for me. (I'm using the windows version of vmware)
Any ideas on how to fix it for the windows version of vmware? (using windows xp)

Please try Android-x86 1.6, http://www.android-x86.org/.
Both wifi and ethernet work, and configurable via GUI.
