Here is a patch I made from svn HEAD (639 at the moment) to fix this issue.
There are two patches: one for source files and another for samples. You can
apply them independently.
There is, however, annoying bug in the behavior. I tested task_align option on
two desktops. When task_align = right, there are configs (I reflected their
names in filenames of attached images) where tasks from the left desktop
overlap tasks from the right desktop. On some configurations it also happens
with task_align = center. I've attached images of this bug.
Another inconvenience is that sometimes tasks on the first desktop are drawn
far to the right for the first time I see them. If I switch to the second
desktop and then switch back, tasks on the first desktop start to draw
normally. The problem seems to go away with second redraw event. I didn't
manage to screenshot it. I've also attached images when alignment looks fine.
I hope someone could help me with the problem or even fix it by his own.

I'm not sure this is really what people would want. I think the behavior from
issue 333 might be more desirable, as I have seen several other panels that
start small and centered on the screen, and expand as you start tasks.
