Hi @chromatic ,

thanks for your work on Modern Perl and other contributions to Perl and FOSS.

I have mirrored Modern Perl on http://perl-begin.org/tutorials/modern-perl/ and now would like to put some web advertisements on the site (in part because that is what @pkrumins wishes to do in order to promote his Perl One-Liners book). The problem is that according to my understanding of what the "Non-commercial" clauses mean in the CC-by-nc-sa licence, I cannot do that without getting your exemption from the licence.

So what do you say? By matter of policy, all the web ads will be from Project Wonderful (and in the future possibly other non-intrusive ad providers) and non-animated, and people can still use ad-blockers such as AdBlock Plus to hide them.

Also see my explicit exemption from web advertising for CC-by-nc-sa here:

Yes, it would be great if I could advertise on perl-begin.org!

The license already grants permission to link to Peteris's book from any mirrored copy of the Modern Perl book.

The license prohibits you from using the text of the book for commercial purposes. As long as no money exchanges hands, do what you like.

Hi @chromatic ,

thanks for your response. I hope I got to the bottom of it. Having discussed this issue with a mutual friend of us (delving a little into philosophy and psychology and theology and stuff) I realised that what I would do is just stop mirroring the actual stuff on http://perl-begin.org/ and then just link to then (which I think can never ethically be prohibited - see http://www.shlomifish.org/meta/linking-policy/ ), and which it is possible the CC-by-nc-sa and all other CC-* licences grant under some of their Fair Use provisions. This will allow us to put the ads on the site.

If and when you wish to exempt Modern Perl from non-commercial use when it comes to web advertisements, either in my case, or in the general case, then I can mirror the book again for perl-begin.org's benefit. But otherwise, I no longer have any hard feelings.

Thanks for all your work on Modern Perl, and many other contributions to Perl, open source in general, open digital media, and World Domination™.

Regards,
