Preference window doesn't work on OS X 10.10 Yosemite #758

OS: OS X 10.10 Yosemite beta 4
Version: The Unarchiver 3.9.1
Problem: When I open the preference window of The Unarchiver, I couldn't check 
unchecked checkboxes and uncheck checked boxes. In other words, I can't change 
settings.
Would you fix this problem?

By the way, as for the checked items, I could unarchive them.

Would need a Yosemite install to do anything about it. Also, best to wait for 
another beta to see if it's just a bug in Yosemite too.

I can confirm this with The Archive Browser too, just bought on AppStore and 
can't use pref panel :(

Just got a mail from Apple that seems to say they've just plain removed this 
feature. Asking them to clarify that, but if so, I'll just have to remove that 
feature.

(Well, in the sandboxed version. Seems the non-sandboxed version should still 
work fine.)

Confirming the same bug using Unarchiver 3.9.1 in Yosemite 10.10.1 on Late 2013 
Mac Pro.
In Archive Formats Preferences dialog, Select all, Deselect all, and individual 
check boxes are unresponsive to clicking. I see this has been an issue since 
July 22, 2014. It would be great if you could please fix this as I rely on it 
in my work. Thanks!

As I said, it will not be fixed, as Apple has simply removed the functionality 
comepletely. You will need the non-sandboxed non-App Store version for it to 
work.

Thanks for the reminder, but I tried TheUnarchiver3.9.1_legacy.zip (For older 
OS X versions and PPC, not sandboxed) and got the same result. Is anyone 
getting this to work as expected under Yosemite 10.10.1?

You are exactly right. Even on the host page, users are complaining of this
issue. My advice is to look elsewhere. No one seems to be in any hurry to
address it.

Actually, I was premature in my judgement. After trashing the App Store version 
and installing the Legacy unarchiver 3.9.1 (non-sandboxed), the selection 
dialog works just fine. Thanks!

Every site I access reverts to the App Store, e.g.

OS: OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite
Version: The Archiver Browser 1.9.1
Install: Mac App atore purchase and install
Problems: 

1) When I open the preference window, I can not check boxes, uncheck checked 
boxes and the Select/Deselect All buttons do not work. In other words, I can't 
change settings.

2)  The application simply closes, with no errors, when attempting to open a 
file.  I am able to open the file when selecting Open with from the Finder.

OK ... my two issues are resolved by downloading the non-App Store version.

Now how do I enter the License from the App Store version into the non-App 
Store version?

I also have a mac and downloaded the unarchiver and the archive browser(paid on 
ITunes)and still can not open any zip files.  Can someone please provide 
laymans terms on how to get the non-app store version so that I can access the 
downloads?

Exact same issue with the version from the app store on yosemite 10.10.1 - 
can't check any of the archive types, select all/deselect all do nothing.

HOWEVER, the "legacy" non-sandboxed version of 3.9.1 works fine.

Please read the other comments before asking. The answer is no, it is not 
possible, Apple has removed this feature from all App Store apps.

You can get the legacy version which is not sandboxed, where this will still 
work.

No, in general, it's slightly better because it doesn't have sandboxing 
limitations.

I tried to download and install version 3.9.1, but the issue is still there. 
Selection doesn't work. Yes, I did trash the Mac App Store version first. Do I 
need to delete some old preferences or is it another way I can debug why the 
non-MAS version doesn't work for me? Running OS X 10.10.4.

You need to download the legacy version, not the normal version.

Aha. I didn't get that detail. Yes, with legacy version 3.9.1, The Unarchiver 
is back to a working condition. Yay! \o/

Starting 3.10 I will not offer the App Store version on the homepage at all, to 
avoid this kind of confusion. I'll make a new non-sandboxed non-legacy version 
to replace it.

The notion that this is all Apple's fault would be more credible if you said 
what feature it is that has been removed. The question in comment #33 is a 
natural one. However since I have many other App Store apps with working 
preferences, the answer must be no, Apple did not remove the ability to have 
preferences.

Interesting reading. The way I understand it, I think it would be better if the 
MAS version of the app just registered all UTI's by default and gave the user 
no option. Perhaps with some sort of warning, if possible. That would at least 
make the MAS version work again for me, since I want all UTI's registered with 
The Unarchiver anyway.

There is no way, with or without asking the user, to make The Unarchiver the 
default handler for UTIs when sandboxed.

Apps can register UTIs as usual, but that only makes them an option when 
opening from the Finder, not the default.

If App Store apps can't set themselves as the default handler, I wonder how 
Hamster Free Archiver 
(https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/hamster-archiver/id466720331?mt=12), which I 
installed from the App Store post Yosemite, was able to do exactly that.

Perhaps they "import(ed) UTIs for (their) application's Info.plist via Xcode" 
as suggested as being the "correct way" in one of the responses in the 
devforums thread you posted.

 Recently download The Archive Browse form Mac app store, and found this problem too. 

 I personally use a dumb way to hack this issue, without buying another copy which need a license. 

1. download the trial version from :http://archivebrowser.c3.cx      If you 
already have a version from the Mac app store, just replace it;
2. set your preference according you requirement;   #I selected the zip,rar and 
7z format 
3. uninstall this version from your mac;   #I used the cmm3
4. re download The Archive Browse from Mac app store

Now you will have a preference setting as you want in The Archive Browse. 

Although the preference still  cannot save any further changes, you can get a 
custom preference setting
