There are a number of vocabularies that can be used for biological keywords, in order to make these datasets more easily discoverable in the CIOOS data catalogue as well as potentially within OBIS as well. Some of the vocabularies that we have discussed for possible use within CIOOS:
Most of these vocabularies (other than LTER) do not include any taxonomic level or species related keywords.
One option for capturing species information is to take the species, family, and vernacular names from WoRMS for each species. However, limiting the total number of allowable biological keywords would help make the resulting list more useful for filtering and search. So some other sources could be used to filter down on species information:
It would be good to have a few use cases of datasets and associated keywords, ideally coming from all regions, that help illustrate what a useful set of keywords might be.
