Design critique - does splitting the graphs make sense here? Instead, why not use a single graph but use the continent input to fill each of the continent's observations in a different color for geom_point()? Then also draw a separate smoothing line on the same plot for just that continent. Then the reader can directly compare the trends between the continent in question and the entire world. I think this is a bit easier to make the comparison in a single graph rather than spread across two.
Plus I think you need to more clearly label the bottom graph so the reader immediately knows what data is being visualized. It wasn't clear to me at first
Logged scales are appropriate here. Make sure to notate in the axis label that the scale is logged
Make more use of the tooltips. If we're going interactive, immerse yourself! You could add information on the country and year of observation, even if you don't visually encode it. Same thing for the formatting of the quantitative values. Round those values to 2 significant digits. This requires modifying the ggplotly() object itself, but we talked about this in class and just requires modifying the components of the built plotly object
Good prototype of a shiny application, plus combining with flexdashboard. Makes shiny applications more powerful and easier to work with IMO
