Improvements to the SocialMediaNewsExposure module and associated content script

  • [ ] For discussion: we should consider renaming this module to more accurately reflect what it measures—social media news navigation events rather than social media news exposure events (e.g., SocialMediaNewsConsumption).
  • [ ] For discussion (CC @benjaminhkaiser): we currently capture navigation to YouTube videos that have the "News & Politics" category. We should consider also capturing the following navigation events:
  • [ ] Navigation to Facebook pages and posts for known news outlets. For example, navigating to https://www.facebook.com/nytimes/ or https://www.facebook.com/nytimes/posts/10152177247244999.
  • [ ] Navigation to Facebook pages for unknown news outlets (see the About block).
  • [ ] Navigation to Twitter account pages and tweets for known news outlets. For example, navigating to https://twitter.com/nytimes or https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1224168861316124672.
  • [ ] Navigation to YouTube channel pages or videos for known news outlets. For example, navigating to https://www.youtube.com/user/TheNewYorkTimes, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqnbDFdCpuN8CMEg0VuEBqA, or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8jDsg-M6qM.

  • [x] Update the copy and pasted nextPageIdCounter name (see comments in other issues).
  • [x] Update getStudyDataAsObject to reflect the current stored content.

• socialMediaNewsExposure-youtube.js Content Script

  • [x] Condense the private window checking. See comments in other issues.
  • [x] Add comments throughout explaining all the YouTube-specific value checks.
  • [x] Don't do the page URL check in the content script. Instead, set the right match pattern for pages to execute the content script on.
