Document simple smoke tests #132

Rather than implementing #121 right away, @mrdavidlaing suggests to start with documenting a few simple smoke tests along the following lines:

documented in the wiki
performed manually at first
just a couple of specific searches to exercise basic functionality

Once this set has been stabilized a bit, we can look into resp. automation via #121.

Cool, thanks much for documenting this - I had deliberately omitted an assignee, because I might have done that myself as well, but your insight into the system/process and respectively concise instructions are highly appreciated.
