Publish Signs and Markings data to Socrata #311

What application are you using?

Signs and Markings Data Tracker

Describe the problem.

Is it possible to add the Signs and Markings Work Orders, Specifications, Jobs, and Work History into Socrata Austin Open Data Portal?

It would be great to make this data accessible to the public similar to the traffic signals work orders, but removing people’s names, attachments, and materials.

Describe the outcome you'd like to see when this feature is implemented.

The Signs and Markings division is looking into having it available on Socrata to create a dashboard in Power BI that updates the latest work daily/weekly by status. This will inform the supervisors on what work needs to be completed with weather/temperature reports.

Describe any workarounds you currently have in place or alternative solutions you've considered.

I have looked into Operations Dashboard, but it is limited to ArcGIS Online Feature Layers (not related tables) and making the dashboard "animated" is not something Operation Dashboards can do currently.

I have also looked into using Microsoft Power BI to fulfill the request by getting the work orders data through Socrata unless there is an easier way through Knack or some other method?

Is there anything else we should know?

Preferably by April 1st, the start of our busy work season.

@johnclary @SurbhiBakshi - would love y'all's feedback on this.

@amenity @SurbhiBakshi we can and should do this, although the SMB folks need to be aware that Socrata does not support table relationships. They would have to build those from within PowerBI (if that's even possible).

Another alternative would be to pull data into power BI directly from Knack, which is something @SurbhiBakshi has been working on for VZA. @SurbhiBakshi have you tested out the ability to join/visualize data from related objects in PowerBI?

Longer term solution: push this data into a dedicated reporting database (i.e., postgresql database). We have been talking about this for other datasets.

@JaceDeloney would you create a new Project (aka, Index), for the development of a BI data warehouse? This database would house any and all ATD datasets for reporting purposes. So far, we've identified this need for Signs and Markings work order data, VZ crash data, and VZ citation data.

@john, would need to test the ability to join Knack datasets in Power BI, think it should be there, but will look into it. I like the idea of pushing data into a dedicated reporting database.

@amenity, @john adding the test to the issue I have for joining Knack and Brazos datasets. Probably good to see if datasets from Knack and Socrata can also be joined.

@SurbhiBakshi - I would say keep this request in mind while you're doing the Knack/Brazos research for VZA but let's hold off on working on it directly for now. It's a brand new request that we haven't discussed with the users.
