Pictures are important for showing who said what in the chat:

if the user came from a social auth that provides a picture, we should display that user picture throughout our UI, e.g. in chat sessions.
if we have no picture, we should at least auto-generate a unique avatar image using some kind of standard library.
consider providing a way on the user's Profile page for the user to upload / change their picture.

if we have no picture, I suggest we follow standard web practice and show that person's initials as their avatar.
