The 'hg status' command doesn't seem show if directories are under source
control or not need to investigate a way to get a directories status, or
just simply guess it from the files in it.

Hi, Mercurial just doesn't track directories at all. Copied verbatim from the 
faq:

"Mercurial doesn't track directories, it only tracks files. Which works for 
just 
about everything, except directories with no files in them. As empty 
directories 
aren't terribly useful and it makes the system much simpler, we don't intend to 
fix 
this any time soon."

Ok,

Well that limits it to just check if files in it are under hg control and setup
status accordingly.
