I had only opened up the timeline so I could easily test my Francia history edits. While I'd love to have the game properly playable in the entire time range, that should probably be a project for a later date.
Still a good thing to have an issue for though

That's fair. If we are going to leave those bookmarks in, though, the game should at least be playable on each of the bookmarks.

The bookmarks are temporary too. There are far too many to include.
Also, there are for more counties and higher level titles that are missing history. The list above merely contains titles for which Paradox was considerate enough to set the holder to none
when the last available holder dies. For other titles, the holder is dead and can't be played, but still colours in the map as if it is playable.
Filling in all that history will be a massive undertaking.
Another hole: the Eastern Roman Empire is broken at the otherwise-fine Iron Century (936.8.7) start.
Now that we've opened up the whole timeline from 769 to 1337, there are a few holes in the history. That is, at numerous points in history, there are provinces with no liege that lay abandoned, rendering the game unplayable at those dates.
I probably missed some (and the Scandinavia item needs to be fleshed out) so feel free to edit this.
