TenFourFox has slightly different strings than Firefox. It is localized in the
same way, but needs certain additional translations. If people develop working
JARs (remember that the chrome manifest must also be updated to reflect this),
then I will accept them into the changesets. Obviously this is not something I
can do myself, but I'll mark this Accepted just so that people know the issue
is acknowledged.

Managed to make a working jar for french translation (joined) and a working
chrome.manifest
The version can be localized with a standard firefox jar except
- branding folder
- updates.dtd located in the locale/<your locale>/mozapps/update/
- <!ENTITY updateCmd.label "Rechercher des mises à jour…">
has a special localization in the locale/bowser/ folder
I hope it will help

Nice work! I'd like to get more people trying your version, so let me point
some people here. If I changed this bug to French localization, would you be
willing to be its owner and accept bug reports? I'll then spin off individual
bugs for each translation that people can own.

I have a friend using a G4/7450 on Mac OS 10.4.11. I would like to point to him
a ready TenFourFox in French. Since I don't use Mac OS X (I'm on GNU/Linux), I
don't know what to do exactly to localize TenFourFox.
When I download "TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app.zip" and I extract the archive, then a
folder "TenFourFox7450.app" is created. Do I only have to put files contained
in "French Localization.zip" and dictionary files in their corresponding
emplacement and compress again the folder "TenFourFox7450.app" in ZIP?
Thanks.

I think your idea is great.

To build a french version of TenFourFox :
Uncompress French localization
Copy all file in
TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app/Contents/MacOs
Then copy dictionaries files in
TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app/Contents/MacOS/dictionaries/

Working on German. This will take a while, though, and I can't promise I'll get
it done completely.
In addition to what narcoti...@gmail.com mentioned (thanks!), there seem to be
some more files in locale/browser (as taken from German-Intel-FF) that don't
work as expected in Ten4Fox.

Here is the "changeset" for the German localization. Looks good so far, but
needs to be tested thoroughly.
Right-click on Ten4Fox.app to show package contents. Changeset includes:
- chrome.manifest (goes into MacOS, replaces original file)
- de.jar, de.manifest (they go into chrome)
- de-DE.aff, de-DE.dic (they go into dictionaries)
I need someone who is able to trigger the specific Ten4Fox update messages
(manual download) to look at the line breaking which is very akward in the
original. I can't test it in the browser too see if I got it right.
About the About box: I took the en-US version and translated line by line. It's
very different from the FF version.

I think it's probably time we split this bug up, leaving issue 42 as a generic
"translations wanted" bug, and then giving French and German their own issue
numbers assigned to narcotix and chtrusch. Any objection?

Okay. narcotix, any objection? I will point the bugs back here so that people
can download the original pieces.
The other piece of the puzzle is automating installation. I think we should
keep the "de facto" format we have here (lang.jar, lang.mainfest,
lang-REGION.aff, lang-REGION.dic) so that we can create an installer (the
installer would then, given a zip file, unzip it, copy the files over, and
modify chrome.manifest). That bug is issue 61.

After working with the localized versions (under 10.4/G3 and 10.5/G4) for a
while, it looks like localizing Ten4Fox is generally unproblematic. So, we
should be seeing more localized versions soon. Firefox is very big in Europe;
additional versions in (at least) Spanish, Dutch and Italian would make a huge
difference. Ten4Fox is gaining popularity in German forums (heise.de,
macnews.de etc.), and in comments, people are asking for a German version.
The only minor issue (in both German and French) I found is that the Help Menu
has no spotlight box. This only concerns 10.5, obviously, and this box is
useless anyway since there's no local help available for Ten4Fox. I hope this
isn't too much of an issue because I don't have the slightest idea were to
start looking to find a solution.

I have a pretty good idea where that is (not) coming from and yeah, you can't
fix it from the localization angle. I don't use 10.5 -- does 3.6 or Camino have
Spotlight there?

Hm, localizations for add-ons are not part of the language pack. They're in the
add-ons. How do we tell the add-ons the correct language? I looked around a bit
but couldn't find anything. Additional entry in chrome.manifest or some other
.manifest?

Hi,
Here is a brand new French localization with minor corrections and the
"aboutDialog" bug fix.
For the addon problem you have to change the "general.useragent.locale" in
about:config
By default it is "en-US" for france, I change it for "fr"

In FF5, some strings have changed, e.g. Preferences>Privacy. I was hoping to
re-use the 4.0 jar file because none of the UI changes that were promized in
April have made it to FF5 (social websites stuff, home tab etc). But now I see
it's probably safer to re-build the jar with the files from our localized
Intel FF5 versions. I will make the German jar + installer app once FF5 final
is out.

I don't know if Narcotix is still working on it. In general, there's no
translation work to be done because Firefox 6/French/Intel is already there.
It's more a technical matter of making a working .jar file from the Intel
version's omni.jar. The installer application (issue 61) for TFF4 can easily be
modified for TFF6. If you like, I can email you the exact steps I use for the
German version.
