I don't think it changes the fan speed #8

I have a ThinkPad T400 as well, freeBSD keeps shutting down randomly. Tried your utility and I don't think it has any effect. I know the laptop can manage its heat cause it dual boots with linux and linux does not shut down. I set your utility to max out early but the fan does its own thing.

BTW: I tried changing the power management in the BIOS to the auto/balenced setting. Somehow freeBSD detects it and does not boot. Same with linux. Do you know what that is all about. Do you know if SELinux has anything with this situation?

It works. Did you try changing example config file and leave only one level specified, e.g. level (6,0,500)? On my Lenovo L470 this causes instant crazy fan spinning.
