Several things that need more work:

Is it still true that animation.FuncAnimation doesn't work with the MacOSX backend? It seems to work ok for me now so I will investigate further.
There are two functions make_anim_outputs_from_plotdir and animate_from_plotdir that seem redundant.

271 addresses the first issue and I also added some comments to clarify that those two functions are not redundant.
