Thoughts on Sounds #15

-like the different quality of water sounds. doing a collage of sounds that make you feel like you're on top of water, then near water, then working in a factory could be cool -kind of like the rain-during-hike sound as fire sound -different voices paired over music to take us in and out of dodo's statements: -musical options: taino songs; symphony; el shaddai; church singer; original comp? -voices to hear: papa, mama, kids w/ kites, pastor in church, jean marie, market -animals, car sounds, parade -so, diff. possible iterations: -voices in, then animal voices, then fade out w/ dodo's voice fading in, then sounds of the shots -music in, then voices on top, then dodo, then silence over visuals -dodo's voice over visuals alone

Buckets: -Dodo introduction while he is talking about interpretation. Feels like maybe we do need a little of the family VO? -Saint Marc intro: city sounds w/ music cutting in/out -HSM: like the sound of people talking under the VO. When he intro's factories: maybe have some of him talking about how the process has been around for a while -Radio: radio music (maybe the el shaddai song?) have audio building and then cutting out when he talks about lack of power? -Kites: maybe intro the church guy's song here? -Dunno about coming back to the girl running down the mountain, doesn't feel like it's working yet -Market -Mireille -Feel like we need one line from Dodo to set off the church montage sequence -Ask Dodo to record captions for sections? -Closing sequence, from when Dodo talks about overlooking St. Marc

9/4 -maybe have Books song softly enter during first kite shot (after Pierre talks) -Music/ambient/viz montage before Dodo's first memory? -could be us in motion w/ classical piece that then settles on fan -did we get cemetery viz when driving? Clip 117. What if his first memory is all driving shots? -Ambient/voices toward end of when he's talking about SM -Can we have him introduce that he works on radio early, so we can leave that out of the radio section? still feelin unwieldy where it is. -Trash section: can we take out first line (SM has a big environmental prob) to link it more simply with the trash section? -Feel like we need a better build out of the trash section. Maybe we go back to transportation shots to get us back into the city? Like the idea of having transport shots serve as backbone for linking montages, with music + ambient sounds as we ride/drive, to make us feel like we're on a trip through the diff parts of the city. So for trash: -After radio have a shot of us driving in the car, w/ music/voices montage beginning to show shots of spots in the city (Taino, bay, nature), and then getting more static shots of trash as we go. Then we have Dodo's VO come in, but skip the intro (SM has a big envrnmt prob) and go straight to the part about leaders. Then get us driving for a while again w/ music to get us out to HSM. -If we establish the drivin round motif early, then I think that helps get us out to HSM too. -Music/ambient/viz montage bridging us to HSM section:

-Music/ambient/viz montage that takes us out of the HSM section:

-Move the 'I am one of the young people who wants to stay' line to the next shot -Maybe don't even need the 'In 5 years...' lines. Could just end w/ the words about doing things subtly. Or even move the subtle words elsewhere and end on 'i have my eyes open'.

9/8: transition from trash to city to HSM

-14:15ish... i like the #89 clip from music, where dodo turns to the camera and nods says yes. Wonder if we could build a little meandering audio montage leading to this out of: -taino #21 after dodo talks about making changes in the city, with more viz of the city leading us to taino and let #21 taino shot hold for a sec before we have a shot of dodo there as last shot of sequence -radio gameshow w/ waves n-n-out sound stutter to black and fade out audio for a second to seal off this montage a little. now the audio fades back in, viz cuts back in, and we're going to HSM and we get clip #89 before Dodo intros HSM for us.

Possible lines for ending: -although I don't have a lot that I can do, I want to give my whole so that a lot of things can eventually change -I always try to see what's happening, how it can change. Try to gather the people to bring change here so we can be an example -to be a nation we transformed ourself into an army. All of the slaves, all of the people transformed themselves into an army. Now it's very difficult for the young people to see these things as symbols. [But] these are the symbols to save. -I discovered so many memories that I've had. I had memories with seeing the three rocks under the broilers to make the bread, my childhood, and then the oven that they used to make the bread. I used to see that a lot when I went to church with my father in other places. [audio clip of radio + Breadfruit, mango, palm] The trees, the breeze in these places, the sound, these are memories that I have. I remember so many things in the past where I've, I used to be visiting with my father.

9/9 -opening: ocean shot at night w/ waves... mama's voice comes in w/ dot transposed on that shot...ocean shot fades out...then same as before -fade in opening titles music during Dodo's last line (gently!) -viz for Pierre's thoughts on Dodo: Dodo w/ people? Something more abstract? -What about morning sequence viz under Pierre's VO? So morning begins to happen w/ diegetic sound then Pierre comes in then viz of Dodo waiting then kites. JUSTATHOUGHT -moving first SM transpo shot over to when Dodo bespeaks SM. Also need a little more from Dodo on SM there. -add pool sequence to end of power sequence -extend trash sequence by a couple of shots + one line -marching band needs a little more buffer between trash sequence and it -intro to HSM: -add back Dodo's memory? -work in JM earlier? -don't know about that shot of the wood burning either -Ocean shot w/ wave noises to accompany 'In my imagination...' -Work through options for last lines

9/21 -sound drops out back to country ambience for dodo's quote -slower fade in of the music during dodo's quote -space out papa more? -maybe add in church singing during first dodo shot, just barely fadin in and out? -bring in morning sounds before dodo starts the phone call? or leave that until he re-starts? -do we want more Junior? -cut off audio of shot right before dodo says 'it's difficult to recall...' and cut in white noise ambience. then slug of black between getting out of morning and into memories. audio and viz from memories flip on at same time. bring church singing audio down more slowly -make cemetery shot longer? -little space between 'i moved to SM' and 'that's where i grew up'? -sounds of the city getting us through SM section [audio from ice cream convo?] -have audio from parade playing low and then fading up til end of 1st SM sequence, where we then cut to parade shot -have sound of his radio station coming in more before he starts talking, along with external radio shots? -for trash audio: have church guy bridging between trash section and kite section? -keep church guy singing longer into kite section? then fading closer together with sound of kite kids. kite kids sounds up and then carrying us through to SM stuff? -for HSM: How bout one of these four options: 1) just ambient sounds from HSM leading us through HSM intro 2) ambient sounds from HSM + waves/white noise/other ambient stuff 3) basically option 2 + church guy song 4) option 2 + one of the taino songs 5) i said just four options but psych about that: option 2 + pool interior song -titles from daniel interview coming up on screen with a few more shots of him at the still -white noise getting us into dodo's HSM memories -cut out junior? -move last line from mireille shot to card playing, move 'it's something to be seen' to another shot after card playing (landscapades?) -play around with how dodo's voice interacts with factory sounds in cane sequence. maybe the sound cuts out completely when he opens 'when i am fighting for a cause', and then the factory sequences come back in, and then the books song comes back in? many possibilities here, so mess around. i also feel like we can space out the last few lines dodo says here just a bit to give them more room to sink in -take longer to fade in books song -let books song play longer, stay longer on footman, but then maybe move through rest of cane shots (old guys, then man baling cane into furnace, then furnace?) -take a little bit longer to get into church sequence -let's ponder end audio last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
