The cog takes up a lot of horizontal space.

Maybe:

display: none by default
display:inline-block on hover (maybe on hover of the whole row?)
position:absolute so it doesn't reflow
have the cog on the first column always visible as a hint that you can do things

This maybe has accessibility implications? Those might be mitigatable via the omni box.
