Clear Linux does not boot on VMware Workstation or ESXi 8 #2867

Unable to boot a Clear Linux VM (from ISO - 37980, both Desktop and Server ISOs) in VMware Workstation 17 Pro nor in vSphere 8 Hypervisors (VMware ESXi, 8.0.0, 21493926). The VM just boots to a blank screen without any access to shell.

Tried on the following hardware with similar results:

Followed exactly the recommended guide, tried booting both in UEFI and BIOS firmware on all systems. Result is the same. Googling gave no conclusive solution. Please let me know if there is something that I am missing or there is a known issue.

@maxiR8 I have had similar issues on vSphere 7.0U3 - the 37980 build iso images linked on the Downloads page basically hangs during booting with blank screen.

I have found there are more recent images available here, which boots fine on VMware - you may try and see whether it works for you. I don't know why Downloads page is not updated with more recent images.

Thank you @krisiasty for the link, I will give it a try and see if the newer builds work. Tried a few older ones, but had the same hang issue.

I'm running Clear Linux on ESXi 6.5 and ran across the same problem when Clear Linux was updated. After four days of searching for what I thought was a boot problem, I have finally found a workaround. Setting the VM hardware configuration to just one Socket for the CPU fixes the problem. I have mine setup as so: CPU Cores 6 Sockets 1 Core per Socket 6 IOMMU Disabled
