This is already done in foobar for example. I find it an important feature because many users just don't care about tagging their songs and this grouping is the only kind really usable by them. Of course, there is the Files tab, but it's not the same (you see just on disk subtree at a time, there's no filtering etc.).

Another reason why this would a lot better than the Files tab is the speed, it would be a lot faster to use the database then to have Clementine searching the folder (and possible subfolders) for every song. This of course depends on the HDD.

Me joining to this request. Mostly songs are organized to folders and tree view is very useful. This is my preferred mode in foobar2000.

Vote from me too.

Would it be hard to implement this feature ?

I vote for this too. It's the only reason I'm not using this player now.

This would be great, also if you do have tagged collections. For example, I encounter duplicate albums in my collection (e.g. different album releases with/without bonus tracks, etc., or folders with different audio formats). In Library view these get grouped as one album, so I get the same songs in my playlist multiple times. An extra 'folder' level for grouping would solve this.

Coming from foobar2000, this is one feature I dearly miss.

I just launched Clementine again on a fresh system install and quickly recalled that this issue is why I typically go through the process of setting up other media players.

I really like the layout and thought that's gone into Clementine, but I have lots of multi-disc soundtracks, typically broken into a "./Disc 1"-like directory structure, and these all get flattened with the existing library grouping options, so tracks from all discs end up side-by-side when adding an album to a playlist.

jfcaron3 commented 4 years ago

I am also waiting for this feature, 7 years after the original issue was opened. I have a collection carefully organized into folders but without proper mp3 tags, so my Clementine library is littered with "albums" that have a single song or "artist" categories that have a single song...it's impossible to recover the structure I imposed within the library system as it exists.

nvtkaszpir commented 3 years ago

The only workaround for now is to use Files tab, where you can browse files and add them to playlist. Yet it may be a bit cumbersome on some linux distros when using network mounts, then usually you need to browse path like:

/run/user/<used-id>/gvfs/

where user-id is a mount for given user, I sugges to open that location in current file browser, enter the share and copy/paste the path to Clementine.

Or adjust your autofs configs to auto mount it under specific path.

Well, I guss this is a good time to point out once again that this feature would be really apreciated! Dealing with huge, not properly tagged collections only through the files tab is a pain, for all the reasons already mentioned before.

Also vote from me to! Just like the "ultrasonic" app on android has this feature. Works like a charm. (with latest update you need to disable "browse using ID3 tags" then you see folder structure again. Without it for me and my library structure clementine is practically useless. So still waiting!
