Probs displaying umlaut/accent characters

What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Run Clementine :P

2. Look at playlist/artist list What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Clementine has probs displaying some umlaut and accented characters. E.g. '�' instead of e.g. 'ä' or 'ç' etc. I also saw it showed 'รณ' instead of a 'ó'. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Clementine v0.5. Win7 x64. Please provide any additional information below. Displaying special chars in other progs works fine, all my music files are tagged properly.

Characters such as "ö" work fine for me. "Mötley Crüe", "Motörhead", and the like display fine.

Possibly an encoding conflict? Clementine's expecting them in ISO-8859 and is getting them in UTF-8 or something?

I'm experiencing the same or similar problem. Tags in some files show properly, but in others doesn't. Other players don't have a problem with the tags. I'm running clementine 0.6 on Ubuntu 10.04.

I'm also experiencing this problem running 0.6 under Ubuntu-gnome 2.32. However, there is a strange behavior: this isn't consistent, as you can see in the image.

Ok, I can see the same thing here but if you just change the tags with Clementine or an external tagging program, I think it will disappear, thats in my case, just modify it manually. Though, I dont know why some things in general are showing strange accents.

I tried to change it using Clementine, but it doesn't work: I was able to modify it on the "edit track information" menu, but after a second or two, it returns to the previous state.

I've just noticed the following: I tried to change a song genre with this symbol � and if 1) the song name or artist had another accent, umlaut, etc, it remained the same; but if 2) the song name or artist had no other accent, umlaut, etc, the symbol disappeared.

Now, if I change both, the symbol AND the rest of the "strange" characters, it works. I.e., I had a song of Muse called "I belong to you / Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" under the "Ingl�s alternativo" genre. If I changed only the genre (sc. "Inglés alternativo"), the symbol remained. When I changed also "cœur" with "coeur" as well as the genre, the � symbol disappeared.

Ok, I would try it now with Easy Tag or something like this. One thing also you have to know is that right now you cannot save the changes properly with Clementine. I would say, try to tag the file again with an external tagger and then move the file/directory manually from your source and then back to the original one and update your library in Clementine and then it should disappear, for me it works this way. You can even use Clementine for that, change the tags, save it, and then move the directory manually and update your library, the changes should be applied this way.

Once it is corrected, if I edit again only the name of the song, the genre will display the � symbol once more.

@ludentico: I had tracks by "Arvo Pärt" like "Symphony №3" and the "ä" was showing as an "�". Following your method I edited the tags (with the program Mp3tag). I changed the numero sign "№" to "No." and all the characters show correctly now. As far as I can see in my library Clementine 0.6 does no longer have so many problems displaying multiple accented or umlaut characters. But the mentioned "№" caused problems in my case, making an umlaut "ä" to show up as "�".

Have the same in 0.6 r2554 under Ubuntu. But the funny thing is, I ripped one of my CD-s with EAC under windows (using LAME). It all seemed to work fine in Clementine, the albumtitle being "Ébredés". Then I noticed I did a typo while tagging the first track's title, so I corrected it using AIMP. Now the first song's album title says �bred�s in clementine. The correction i did with AIMP included an "ő" letter which counts as a special character. The issue could have something to do with that.

This problem also occurs in lyrics loaded from the net.

eg lyrics.wikia,com correctly shows: αῖαν παμμήτειραν ἀείσομαι

but in clemetine some characters are displayed as placeholders. The strange thing though is that if I copy the garbled text here via the clipboard it ends up being correct. This seems to be a font selection problem.

This happens here (Ubuntu 10.10, Clementine 0.6) at least with Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files when the umlaut character is second or third in the word, and only then with some characters: "ä" turns into "ה", whatever that is, "å" turns into "e", but at least "ö" and "Ä" stay as is. And even ä and å work when they are the first or fourth (or later) character of a word in a tag, so the track title "Pääni" turns into "Pההni" but, for instance, "Jeesus oli venäläinen kantoraketti" stays correct.

That definitely was is not a comprehensive account of strange umlaut-related anomalies there are - Clementine seems to be doing some really unexpected and non-standard things with accented/non-ASCII characters.

Additionally, editing these characters with abovementioned restrictions in Clementine will also cause those tags to be screwed up in the file the way they are shown in Clementine, so in addition to not showing tags correctly, editing them in Clementine will screw up the files too.

I'll be happy to provide example files...

OK; Here's a short and beautiful song in Ogg Vorbis format with "Pääni" in the TITLE tag, shown incorrectly as "Pההni" in Clementine. Editing the tag in Clementine (or at least adding something to it) will cause the characters to be messed up in the tags too.

If there's encoding detection, it sounds like a likely cause for this. Vorbis comment (used at least in Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files) are always encoded in UTF-8 anyway.

The problem is still there with latest development build (0.6r2651) for mac. Especially 'ü' and 'ö' characters are causing problem in mp3 tags. I'm pretty sure my files are tagged with version 2.4 and utf8.

The tracks with wrong accents/umlaut characters wont be scrobbled either. I have also the problem that I cannot find them in the library when I reopen Clementine.

Maybe forcing encoding to utf-16 for id3v2.3 and utf-8 for id3v2.4 could be an option, because that's pretty much the standard nowadays. Right now the detection is causing more problems for me than it solves as i have all my files with v2.4 and utf-8 and get miscoded characters all over the place.

I've found a way to fix the problem. I used SQLite Database Browser and changed the name there manually. The location for the database is .config/Clementine/clementine.db

Whilst Qt keeps advertising its unicode support, I've had problems with encodings with it. As far as I can tell Linux Mint is using UTF-8, but Qt hasn't always interpreted it well. I found that QTextCodec::setCodecForCStrings(QTextCodec::codecForLocale()) and similar sometimes helped.
