The current version of the library fails to build on some platforms which can 
be seen here:
https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=stringencoders

The bug was reported via debian bugs:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=695024
The report also contains a patch to fix this bug.
