As discussed on Zulip, I discovered a somewhat alarming/frustrating problem whereby regardless of current carbon intensity, the Branch website seems to at least try to load the high-resolution version of the first image on any given page.
I know the following numbers aren’t especially worrying, but they’re only so low due to me recently swapping out the PNG cover for a JPG. Before that we were seeing the same issue, but with up to several MB of data.
Below is the amount of compressed data for each of the carbon intensities, for the current Branch homepage (uncached) :
Low (should be the largest number): 286.66 kB
Moderate (should be the middle number): 312.54 kB
High (should be the lowest number): 286.23 kB
As you can see, this causes a peculiar problem where the “moderate” intensity version of the site actually incurs more data download the “low”, while the “high” is the same as the “low”.
