Hello, I mean no disrespect for native language in Finland but I think some audience is excluded because of language barrier. Do you know when would be the English Clojure Bridge session? I just hope to see we can spread Clojure regardless of language background. (I assume basically all Finnish coders can also understand session in English too, which might not be true but I you could make your own judgement on this matter.)
Hi @wontheone1! Thanks for the comment. We ran the previous ClojureBridge session in English in April: https://clojurebridge.fi/events/helsinki-20190406/index.en.html We haven't planned the next event yet, but apparently there's a need for one. :-)
In our event, we asked the participants about their language preference. Majority of the audience (80 % or so) were fine with either language and then there were about 10 % who preferred Finnish and 10 % who preferred English. We discussed this a bit, since the possibility to get mentoring in Finnish would lower the barrier for some people and vice versa for some other people.
We ended up running all the presentations in English while having Finnish speaking mentors available for the actual group work. We also encouraged people to ask questions in Finnish too. This worked very well. For us, this setup was a nobrainer since one of the mentors does not speak Finnish on the professional level.
Now that we translated the materials in English, it's very straightforward to run it in English in the Future too. In my opinion, the next step would be to run a ClojureBridge continuation workshop in English. That was requested in both ClojureBridges.
ClojureBridge happens at Siili on 11.5. more information here (in Finnish): https://clojurebridge.fi/events/helsinki-20190511/
If you would be able to participate as a mentor, please ping me. I can add you to the ClojureBridgeFI Slack. Eetu Kaivola from Siili is the main organizer.
