Upstream merge #49

It's been a bit since we merged from upstream. Here's what it would take.

@lharding What's your gut here? Do we have a guinea-pig machine we could test on? Do you feel like the risk is low enough to try running this branch on one of our working machines?

My gut is that this is going to be fine. Only the homebrewdir thing is concerning, and that will probably turn out to be nothing, but we do have the one guinea-pig machine to test on. I could try running this there, and see how it works.
