Add tests to check the functions for producing masks for periodic domains and for doing nearest-neighbor calculations on periodic domains

I've added a small test that also confirms this works for objects that straddle multiple boundaries at the same time, when the nearest-neighbour distance crosses both boundaries here. That works according to my expectation too; feel free to merge that in if you like before moving on to the release!
