to do: -create bill of materials with budget$$ cap: $1,500 (James how is that looking?) -submit proposal to BSCIT Fund (How long is this process? I can help here!) -build the thing! (James + kelly + derek(?) + invite rest of house)

&&james do we need to buy a new screen? if so, this is not accounted for. some folks at council vocalized that they didn't want a tv screen as a monitor

$500 for a graphics card? Seems like someone's excuse to build a gaming computer....

funny thing is it'll probably get approved.

hey nerdy nucleon :) i don't think james was interested in gaming on this computer, but was instead interested in making it capable of some pretty intense modelling (correct me if i'm wrong, james). Alex, do you think this is exorbitant? do you have any better suggestions? We are open to ideas :D

  1. cost of software not factored in (recurring cost eg: licenses)
  2. everyone at Cloyne is a UC Berkeley student and has access to campus computing resources and software
  3. hardware doesn't match projects' scale or complexity (realistically people will at most be modeling their dinky 3d prints)
  4. gpubenchmarks.com says gaming, period. If it was a link to a quadro or firepro, then maybe? Again, hardware doesn't match the projects.
  5. $170 case and a blu-ray drive... I don't have to explain why this is excessive

Save your house's money. Don't build it. Get some heaters or radiators installed in that room and maybe people will actually go there.

Sorry to be blunt, but spending money for the benefit of a few people in the short term, especially in the coops, is bothersome and uncooperative.

So we need a computer in the makerspace so that we can install drivers for 3d printer and have 3d editing software there. So that it is easy for somebody to start working on that.

Your new link addresses none of my points, and it's honestly even more comical than the first. This should cost a max of $300, and the old kitchen computer would be adequate.

Don't ask BSCIT to fund this. It's not fair to have the BSC support this.

James- I recognize that council did discuss this briefly, but we were only in agreeance on a budget cap (which we don't necessarily have to meet). I understand where you're coming from, a lot of cool shit can be done on a computer, but maybe we should focus on the realistic use of this computer. I'm happy we got Alex's perspective on this because honestly there aren't that many people involved in this conversation that know a lot about hardware.

As a member of this makerspace computer committee (whatever the f that means), i think we should take another look at our proposed bill of materials. Alex, you are invited to come along if you have the time. James, are you free today before council at all?

Alex, don't think your opinion isn't valued because you moved out. But how you presented it was pretty rude. If this machine were for gaming I wouldn't be fighting so heavily against windows on it. I don't really game and I'm not going to try to make "excuses" or manipulate the house for my own gain.

  1. We would try our best to only use open source or at-least free of charge software, If we can't find an open alternative then we likely just do without that software than buy it.
  2. Unlike campus resources which are not well known about or need key card access, this computer is open to everyone in the house. It gives people the ability to experiment with many different things.
  3. Yeah, a cheaper computer would do the job but this one would do the job better and can handle more things. Cloyne is a house with many CS and MechE students, a computer that handle " dinky 3d prints" but can also do intense GPU processes like graphical models involving random particle collision within a gas, or handle large CPU intense processes like compiling , is much more convenient than having to go to campus for resources.
  4. gpubenchmarks.com is a dead link but I didn't realize they sold Quadros for under $1000, I've updated the parts list. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/cYW2Jx
  5. The case is huge and transparent, everything is very visible so people can look into the device and see what is going on. If they are curious and ask questions about what parts do what. The blu-ray was cut out but was included previously because there's a chance there are blu-rays people want to in the future but would otherwise not be able to use. blu-ray drives support CD,DVD, and blu-ray but only cost about $15 more than a DVD drive.

It wouldn't just benefit a few people for a short period, it would be open and accessible to any member of the house for years to come.

This was brought up multiple times in council and I did research after every time. Sadly, the time it was discussed the most I wasn't there.

I've discussed this with Aric separately, I discussed it with Derek before Kelly got there on Wednesday, and have been trying to discuss with Hamid but I never see him.

A $300 computer is probably to weak for some of the things people want to do, I'm thinking 3D rendering or something like Solidworks, but we can try it out and then in the future, if need be, upgrade with proof that we need a stronger one.

Kelly, yeah I'm down to meet before council.

Hi everyone!

I'm wondering why you decided to use ddr4 - I think this forced you to buy an extremely expensive motherboard.

BSCIT currently has a limit of ~400$ for a desktop. So the bscit request can be used to subsidize your supah computah by 400$, with the house covering the rest. The bscit fund is, however, meant for general purpose machines.

I will try to relax the bscit restrictions during the semester, but I suspect you will have to wait until the end of the semester for this machine (if funds are left by then).

This comes under the 400$ mark, you can build it yourself and if you'd like to do 3d modelling, throw in a discrete gpu.

This is somewhat offline in terms of BSCIT processes... But we have assembled a new computer with the hopes of funding it with $400 from BSCIT and the rest from our house account. Should we resubmit a BSCIT application?

Graham didn't really know what to buy.. I talked to him on Thursday and he hadn't thought we told him what to get yet. We sent him the partpicker link in Feb but nothings actually happened since then :/

I will help him / make sure he buys the parts asap. I'll busy by finals time, but will have time during summer to build if all else fails. James will you be around this summer?

If the parts have been ordered then they should take about a week. Once the parts get here it'll take a day at most to build with the workshop being what makes it take that long. Have the parts been ordered? The budgets have already been pretty much split into house and central with my purchases already. Graham, if you can't, is it fine if I order the stuff tomorrow?

looks like we'll be getting all of the materials by 4/15/2016 (fingers-crossed!). Build party planned for 4/30/2016 from 12:30-6:00 ish. James will lead the build. Kelly will promote :D
