Is FxOS dead? #5

All the news sites say that the OS itself will be discontinued (see here):

Mozilla is ending its plan to build an OS for smartphones.

Did they get it wrong (I thought it's only the hardware and partnerships they are discontinuing), or does FxOS really have no future?

stellirin commented 8 years ago

yes, everyone got it wrong (as is usual with the media).

Firefox OS is not dead. Nothing has stopped. Nobody has lost their job. Simply that for the near future Mozilla will not try to push OEMs for new devices.

The reality is that OEMs are also not happy with the current status of Firefox OS, so Mozilla is taking 'time-out' to improve the whole OS, make it more compatible with more types of devices, without the pressure of OEMs to 'fix this' or 'change that'.

Without pressure from OEMs Mozilla is free to make more radical changes that are necessary and in many ways overdue.

Hopefully we'll one day again see Firefox OS devices when the whole OS has improved.

Okay, cool. Thanks for the quick reply :+1:

Hi, it seems Mozilla changed its mind (https://discourse.mozilla-community.org/t/firefox-os-connected-devices-announcement/6864/66). I have a Xperia E3 (my third FxOS device) and I love it, but I'm worried about the updates you provide, will you continue ? You made an amazing job to provide updates to the Xperia devices, and I would completely understand if you decide to stop losing your time with an OS which won't get any major update. Thank you again!

Don't worry, we'll keep them alive for as long as sanely possible. Mozilla intends to finish 2.6 so we'll make sure we get a good final 2.6 release too. Hopefully that won't mean the end, and Mozilla gives us a good way to continue.

Ok, thanks! I just hope the 2.6 release won't end the contributors participations.
