Further testing for root config setting vs install type

As a system developer I want the system config to be fully tested so that any subsequent opportunities for user error are minimised.

e.g.

• use of root and tilde
• use of subdirs within root ~/subdir/temp etc
• clear cutoff to when a more detailed config option is a better use case
