Google as a source for data? #49

Hi, I've just downloaded your extension and it worked! (Others I've tried have failed :( )

I have very few needs, but I was wondering if there are any plans to use Google Finance as a data source?

Reason I ask, is that I believe that Yahoo has in the past turned off their API which left me in the dark for quite a while.

I don't know about FT, but thought Google might be a good reliable data source.

I don't know how your extension works, but I suspect you're scraping the data from a page rather than using an API? Is that reliable?

Keep up the good work!

I was supporting Google until last year when they completely changed the way the data was structured on their web site. Because it was actually broken for a few months until the issue was raised I was figuring Google isn't actually used by that many users of this extension.

Which leads to the seconds aspect: the extension is using web scraping instead of any proper API (no free one exists anyway). So when web sites changes, I may have to make a few (or not so few) adjustments to make it working again but the hope here is that unless they discontinue their web site completely or create such a mess that it is impossible to extract usable data, a source is not going to go away. Having said that I would like to add another source: if it covers a FX, equities and ETFs and it is not too much pain to extract the data.

Re: reliability of all of this - it is free so there are no guarantees but over the last few years it was fairly stable. Any paid source would be nice - I'm open for suggestions. I looked at a few but their usage models (starting with a free tier if possible) are really rubbish. They usually limit the number of symbol lookups per seconds. But with the spread sheet you may have 20 or 50 or 100 symbols and you want to look up all of them fairly quickly but not again for the next few hours. The paid APIs will reject those requests (as too rapid because the limit is e.g. 5 requests per seond) even though it is just a burst and you leave them alone afterwards.

Thanks for the great extension!

Please take a look at using Nasdaq.com for a site to get ETF values. The ETFs below do not return information on Yahoo or FT for Dividend information.

https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/etf/svol https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/etf/tsly https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/etf/oark

Nasdaq site seems to pick up the EFT information I need that Yahoo and FT do not seem to show;
