The large variety of variables led to clashes in file names. E.g. ta being requested on many levels for a short period and a reduced number of levels for a longer period.

There file naming proposal for CMIP7 would put vertical level information in another part of the file name. This replaces the existing rule that <table name><variable name> should be unique in the output files with uniqueness of <frequency>.<variable name>.<gird info>.

grid info includes a range of user options and is extensible ... not clear that it can be specified clearly in advance.
