CMI5 and CMIP6 have not specified what temporal resolution is required for input data. E.g. can a monthly mean be calculated from one value per day, or does it need 4? Can a 6 hourly mean be calculated from 2 values 3 hours apart, or is mor input data required? The specification of the input time interval is a recommendation in CMIP6, but not required.

Some models accumulate means sampling every time-step (which varies from model to model). I don't think we should specify the actual sampling interval, but we could specify a minimum sampling interval.
