Have you confirmed the host key prior to using SFTP? I had the same problem and
noticed putty needed to have the cached hosts key added before it worked. not a
solution as it should be managable by SP.

It was broken. Somewhere along the line, SuperPutty stopped being able to read
the pscp output when the user was being prompted for a password. (e.g.
"SomeUser's password:"). That's how SP understands it needs to ask for a
password as opposed to assuming pscp is using key based authentication.
I've worked around the problem in 1.4.0.4. Give it a try.
Note, that if it doesn't know the host's key, it will show a status message
asking you to connect via putty first to accept/cache the key in the registry.
