Hi, could you try to connect HDMI and close display so the sound stops playing.
Then hold option key on the keyboard and click volume icon on the top menu bar,
you will see a couple of option how to output sound. An HDMI option should
present, click it and check if sound starts playing via TV.
It would be great if you will answer here is that helped you or not. Thanks,

Hi Pavel,
So to be clear on your requested steps:
1) Play through HDMI
2) Close the lid
3) Reopen the lid
4) Press option+sound
5) Select HDMI
Is that correct?
If so, when I do that the sound does start playing again but when I
re-close the lid it stops again. Actually, the video and sound momentarily
stops then only the video starts again.
Thanks!

No, it needs to switch sound output with closed lid by using external mouse or
keyboard.

Ah, OK. I'll have to find an external mouse first ;-)
