Some possible small gifts (soft ones) could be:
A personalized certificate of attendance can be given digitally to all attendees.
The following ones can be given to some attendees by the draw. (Exact total number can be decided by local meetup organizers and CNCF)
Discount codes for some CNCF online courses/certifications
Discount codes for some CNCF conferences
A personalized certificate of attendance can be given digitally to all attendees.
That's an idea. Is there an easy way to do that? Maybe the local meetup organizers could have some app on their smartphone and issue credentials in person. If you organize a meetup using bevy, there is an option to sign-in attendees. Perhaps we could use this functionality. I would not connect it to this issue #129 which is about issuing credly badges for organizers and speakers since issuing all theses credly badges would be too much work for us…
@k8tgreenley would it be possible to get some discount codes for LF trainings / attending KCCN NA virtually?
@mehmetmgrsl I think discount codes / vouchers for select training or KCCN NA virtual attendance would be easiest to distribute and organize and IMO most desired by attendees.
Out-of-the box crazy idea - we could plant trees in their name with a sponsorship? https://www.nationalforest.org/get-involved/plant-a-tree/dedicate-a-tree Or they could pick one?
This is also an interesting idea. I have mixed feelings about it. In general, I think it's good to organize something like this, but I'd like it even better if the participants planted the tree themselves, and we didn't outsource this work. (Kind of like the discussions about carbon offsets and the criticism of not changing ourselves).
We should also make sure we achieve the core goals of this event (see goals in this document). If we focus too much on planting trees, we might miss our goals. I could see this happening if we take on the coordination of a tree planting initiative (at so many meetups). IMO we in the software industry should not plant trees, we should continue to develop (green) software. (Planting trees in this context may fuel the discussion of greenwashing).

Thanks @leonardpahlke , yes you are right if a meetup is organized via Bevy, Eventbrite, or Cvent, these platforms generate and distribute digital certificates to attendees automatically as far as I know. I will check some other easy options as well.

sounds good :)
@leonardpahlke how many discount codes are you looking for?

I think that having an option of actually doing some form of good deed for the benefit of the planet is good, because it's not given that everyone wants/needs courses or certifications. I feel like such an option probably suits the purpose of our group much more than many other tech meetups and events. But since this is a first time we're doing it I think it's OK to start simple and just go with some e-badges and discount codes. What I think we can do though is to include the question regarding gifts in our survey: we can ask if attendees would've appreciated an option to contribute to a good deed for example instead. One thought I have is that local organizers could for example arrange a "Clean Up" day or a "Plant something" day and attendees could join that somehow...in-person or by supporting this initiative in some way. So I support your concerns regarding actually contributing to something physical, measurable instead of outsourcing it to someone.
@leonardpahlke how many discount codes are you looking for?
@k8tgreenley, not sure exactly. These codes would be for attendees. We are looking to have 20+ meetups, likely with ~50 – 70 attendees each. It's unclear how many attendees would actually use the discount codes. It may be simplest to share at each local meetup a cloud native sustainability specific discount code which is not personalized to attendees (so everyone could use it online in the ticket ordering checkout) to get X% off their virtual pass to KCCN NA 2023. How would you recommend handling small gifts for attendees?

@guidemetothemoon, great idea putting a question about the gifts into the survey (ref #128). As I said in my comment, I like the idea too. I could see us organizing something like this for the Kubecon Cloud Native Con (KCCN) / Open Source Summit (OSS), for example. For me, KCCN / OSS would be a much better place to do that. At KCCN / OSS we don't determine the program, that's important because for Cloud Native Sustainability Week we need to make sure we accomplish our goals and don't send the wrong message (e.g., that the "CNCF" community is lost planting trees). The KCCN / OSS is only happening in one place which makes it a lot simpler organizing an in person event. However, it is still a lot of work, if there is someone in the community working to put something like this together, it would be a great, also for us in TAG to connect. @guidemetothemoon / @catblade feel free to open up an issue to track this idea.
@leonardpahlke when does the first meetup kick-off?
All meetings are held in the same week, the second week of October.

@leonardpahlke , @k8tgreenley
As I mentioned in my previous post, the course/certificate discount code can be given to the lucky attendees by drawing :), not all.
i.e. CNCF can provide 20 discount codes for each local meet-up organizer. Then each local meet-up organizer can make a draw to select lucky attendees.
Of course, it would be great if discount codes can be given to all attendees, if possible.
@mehmetmgrsl, another good idea. Let's discuss the ideas we shared on this issue with everyone else at our next meeting. @k8tgreenley we will update you after that, thanks 🙏
Regarding discount codes we can also consider a possibility of providing a discount code for the CNCF store as an alternative to courses/events😊
Unfortunately, I can't offer a discount for the store.
Hi @k8tgreenley,
If possible, could you suggest some other small gift options, please?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry, a small gift requires shipping, which isn't within our budget for this year. Codes for training are likely what we will be able to provide

Hi @k8tgreenley ,
Sorry for the confussion, what I mean by "small gifts" is not the "hard" ones. As I mentioned in one of my messages on this issue, it is soft ones:) -> https://github.com/cncf/tag-env-sustainability/issues/135#issuecomment-1604888114
I've named it "small gifts" because rather than offering entire courses or conferences for free to many attendees, we can provide luckly attendees with 10% or 20% discount codes. These discounts can be given through a draw and will be limited to, for example, 15 attendees for each local meeting, in accordance with the CNCF budget.
In conclusion, your answer "Codes for training are likely what we will be able to provide" is good news :) Thanks for that .
@leonardpahlke do we have an exact number of meetups that will be held?
Yes, so we have 16 meetups confirmed and scheduled (event is announced). We are waiting for 5 to be scheduled very soon (not yet announced late stages of event planning) and another 7 are interested in scheduling it, but they have not confirmed location / event just yet (mid event planning). I expect around 25 meetups (+/-).
Confirmed and Announced (event links are at https://tag-env-sustainability.cncf.io/cloud-native-sustainability-week/)
Confirmed (waiting for event announcement)

Unlikely
Do we know when the additional 7 will be confirmed?

I will get the info latest by Tuesday next week.
@k8tgreenley we have 23 meetups confirmed. I am waiting for feedback for 4 more meetups.
Thank you for confirming, I will have codes shortly
@leonardpahlke can you please provide me the final list of meetup locations, so we can create unique code?
@k8tgreenley 22 seems to be the magic number. Its a bit difficult to get a grip on a few folks and get the event scheduled.. some meetups drop out, new ones comes in. It settles slowly. 😁
