See the tasks having gci tags explicitly are meant ONLY for the gci participants. So, you can work on any other issue that does not have a GCI tag.

On gitter do corobo unassign link to this issue. And you'll be unassigned. https://github.com/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+user%3Acoala+label%3Adifficulty%2Fnewcomer+-label%3Ainitiatives%2Fgci+no%3Aassignee has the list of all the newcomer issues. You can claim and work on that.
