@conormuldoon start discussing about SOS library for OpenLayers. Or whatever we are going to use to show SOS.

No, I am talking about http://cobwebeu.ucd.ie/sosviewer/ and whatever they are developing there.

I would suggest to focus on the existing SOS implementation in openlayers, work to be done is to add a button 'add to map' or 'open' on any metadata record having an SOS link.

I think you need some panel to select an observed parameter from the SOS capabilities and maybe add a filter (period), then display the sensors (or observations) on the map when clicking a sensor a method of viewing observations could be a graph
