Edit: In my case just disabling Subtitles once in the player makes YT remember and refreshing the page leaves them disabled. Extension Subtitles setting is for forcing it always on. You dont need to enable it for all other settings (language, font) to take effect.
Looked some more how Subtitles work on YT. YT will force Subs on all Japanese Video with Subs available [The Ultimate Desk Setup 2023] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1OFHxdBrZU YT will not do that for English video with some Japanese and available subs [Will a Stock Toyota JZX110 Drift?] DannyDC2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2BV1QD9Mz4
Our Player|Subtitles|Subtitles option can only Force ON subtitles. I implemented your request https://github.com/code-charity/youtube/pull/2385
I would like the subtitle toggle to be off by default when playing a YouTube video, even when using the subtitle feature in Improve YouTube.
In the settings of Improve YouTube, go to 'Player' -> 'Subtitles' and turn on the settings related to subtitles. This currently results in the subtitle toggle being turned on every time you play a YouTube video. This might be great if you primarily watch international videos. However, for those who mainly watch videos in their native language, it is inconvenient to have to turn off the subtitle toggle each time when subtitles are not needed.
I suggest adding an option in the 'Subtitles' settings such as "If you turn this option on, the video will play with the subtitle toggle off by default." This would greatly improve the user experience for those who do not need subtitles by default.
