Default virtual keyboard for N900 #28

What kind of virtual keyboard is the best as the default one?

My suggestion is
* thin (one row) layout for symbols when keyboard is opened
* full keyboard when keyboard is closed
* keyboard + keypad(flick?) for portrait mode

The way I see it, for a default keyboard, it is best to keep it as close to the
built in system one:

*Bigger keys
*Letters occupy the full width of the screen
*Modal layout for numbers and symbols

And of course, the current one as a more advanced setting, as you can do way
more with it, once you get used to the smaller keys.

Also, regarding your one row symbols keyboard idea, it would be nice, but make
it so you can move it so it doesn't always block a single part of the screen,
that might become an issue.

Opera Mobile has the best implementation of a virtual keyboard on the n900.
However, in landscape mode I wish it had a manual way to toggle it on/off (ie)
control sym), instead of coming on automatically.

The Good:
- keys are big enough
- keys change dynamically to display exactly what they will output when typed.
- there are not too many keys available at any given time
- has 2 dedicated buttons to switch between different virtual keyboards
including: one for numbers/math and one for non-English European characters
- comes on automatically when you need it in portrait mode
- clicking outside the virtual keyboard turns it off (More consistent with the
maemo OS behavior and there is no x that you have to click to close it)

The Bad:
- landscape virtual keyboard is automatic
- only works in opera mobile

Some cool virtual implementations I saw online:
1. Iphone's AKaSaTaNaHaMaYaRaWaN input method -
http://www.japannewbie.com/2010/05/10/alternative-japanese-iphone-input-method-i
n-the-wild/
2. Messagease for romanized characters - http://www.exideas.com/ME/index.php

But for the n900 I see those or any full featured virtual keyboard as mostly
useful in portrait mode only. Landscape mode is different because a virtual
keyboard is only really necessary for symbols that the hardware keyboard can't
provide.

Is there a way to completely disable the virtual keybord on the n900?
