What change would like to see?
Implement VT-100  standard in serial monitor.

Why?
In order to use VT-100 commands to manipulate the terminal window, like making 
simple menus..

Would this cause any incompatibilities with previous versions?  If so, how
can these be mitigated?
None of which I'm aware of.

I don't imagine this happening any time soon; it seems like a lot of work for 
what seem like esoteric use cases.  If you do want VT100 support, it's probably 
best just to use a terminal program that supports them.
