checkmarks not appearing for new users until refresh

Well here's a fun sorta edge case: Checkmarks (denoting completeness of an instruction or exercise) do not appear for new accounts unless refresh occurs. Potentially problematic because I don't want new users to get a bad first impression.

To replicate:

1. create new account
2. click on any concept and go to any instruction
3. open corresponding section in side navigation

expected: green checkmark appears for instruction that is currently opened actual: no checkmark appears (until after refresh)
