oliviaxmeng hi organizers, has any chapter ever designed a codebar 'mentorship' program. would be interested in doing so for the NYC chapter. We have coaches who are interested in providing mentorship, but I feel a designed program would be more likely to set students for success. any details such as program length, frequency of meeting time would be helpful. thank youuu

A lot of people piped in to say that they were interested and Anastasia Kuprina started something for Helsinki. Where do we go from here?

Following internal discussions in West London, it feels like mentoring would also be a good way to provide people with support throughout their careers, not just at the beginning. In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to support people all the way from junior to CTO. Here are a few career changes where mentoring could be useful:

From one technical stack to another
From one tech role to another (e.g. back-end to front-end and vice-versa)
Going up the tech seniority ladder, e.g. junior dev -> lead dev -> solutions architect
Change to management roles

For many of those changes, the support nerwork that an individual has built over the years may not be able to guide them through, while codebar mentoring could enable them to extend that support network. It would also provide a message to students that codebar is still for them even after they get a first job in tech.

Things to consider:

How do we know who can mentor? Could this be an additional question for coaches?
How do we know who is looking for a mentor? Maybe have some specific mentoring chapters that are not location based but based on the type of mentoring needed?

Important to have support for a mentor
Mentor guide (how-to) with continuous support for them
Private Slack channel for mentors
Risk assessment and where to go for help? (Code of Conduct)

MENTEE

Protect student (safeguarding)
Complaint procedure (how to flag this)
Would it help retention? Student would then not just disappear
Junior developer (someone who has recetly got their first job) could help someone who is just starting out

Blend some of our communities together
