Hi @ixley! I'm a current (2015) fellow, and the work-life balance seems to be great here. Fellows are expected to work full-time, so generally 40-hour work weeks. Most work about that amount. The work is flexible and you can set your own hours. The major concern is that you're able to fully coordinate with your team, participate in the workplace, and to be present for meetings. Everyone is more focused on results than tracking hours.
I was a 2014 fellow. I agree with @bengolder's answer. Further, it is a very self-directed work environment: in your team of 3, you'll be responsible to each other to plan out your work and get it done. This means there's a lot of opportunity for flexibility and mutual understanding, but it also means that sometimes there is a large amount of work that needs to happen that you'll be responsible for- certain times during the fellowship year are busier than others in terms of meeting deadlines, being available for travel, etc.
Thanks @bengolder @jden — really helpful responses, and just what I hoped to hear.
With the understanding that there is some travel required and intense periods may require additional focus, I'm curious to get a better sense of what kind of time Fellows put into projects and related learning. Have Fellows found they are able to maintain a reasonable 'work-life' balance (at least averaged over the course of the Fellowship)—particularly those with families?
