Sign In #71

I propose this for accounts/authorization.

I think we'll get spammed if we don't have a sign in process. I suspect we'll likely make sign in mandatory after we user test but for the first round lets leave the "Skip Sign in" option. I can detail out the flows for FB/Twitter/email but overall this should give a decent sense of the scope.

It will mean that later we'll need a minimal 'account/profile' area of the app, for which I can also provide designs.

This page would appear immediately after a user hit the 'share your tips' or 'contribute info' buttons on the Property Summary.

I'd like to explore options which don't involve an explicit sign-in or user account creation process.. If the primary reason to have a user account is to reduce spam, we can explore options or wait for it to actually become an issue. Sites like LocalWiki are an existence proof of maintaining high quality, low-spam content without requiring user accounts or signins.

Most wikis of any scale require accounts/login. I think we should encourage people to authorize to increase trust and add a sense of community by having names associated with reviews. We can user test this really easily. I'll set it up with the next CUT group.

I have objections to promoting facebook and twitter in this way. I think with a better understanding of our actual requirements we can come up with a better solution. For example, if we need to reduce spam, there are a number of alternatives including rater limiting, heuristics, and flagging. If we need to increase trust of the content, we can ask people to add their names to things. If we need some other form of verified identity, we can use email or sms confirmation.

Like the GDS says, "start with the user need"

Ok, here's a revised MVP for the Sign In page. This would appear after a user writes a tip and before the short form questions.

If we can it would be super cool to populate the username feel with everything before the @ in the email address, so that if you're ok with that you can just enter your email. Otherwise you can edit your username and continue.
