My gut tells me that moving stuff around on the page this much would be distracting: new content in the box and new size for the box is a lot to track, made worse if you didn't mean to click on a marker and now it’s hidden by the larger box.
Alternative: arrange the page with the box below the map, which would benefit from a letterbox arrangement anyway due to the primarily east-west distribution of brigades.

Made new Brigade pages in the v3 Brigade site. https://github.com/codeforamerica/brigade
Description
When an individual Brigade is selected, the overlay panel with the Brigade's information should become the main focus of the page. Currently, it remains the same size and of secondary importance compared to the map.
Perhaps the panel could take over the screen and the map could be just a remnant on the right side. Clicking on the map would go back to it.
This would give us a lot more screen space to talk about the Brigade and their activities.
