HealthCollage: digital collages for patient feelings #28

BLUF: HealthCollage, simple digital collaging to help capture social determinants of health (Like Secret, but for Health?) Needs: Developer to build lightweight prototype? I can do design. Status: Idea

Thought about this after reading CHCF's design challenge "Putting Care in Context: Empowering Patients to Share Their Barriers to Good Health".

The design brief from CHCF: "Today, health care providers do not routinely seek information about a patient’s social, environmental, and behavioral hurdles to health. When it does happen, the care provider initiates the conversation by asking a uniform set of questions which are typically only focused on one facet of a patient’s life. The process is often rushed, not coordinated with screening for other barriers or risks, and the information may not make its way to other members of the patient’s primary care team or specialists. This design challenge aims to fix these problems by empowering patients to take an active role in recognizing, chronicling, and sharing information about hurdles in their life that impact their health."

Idea: My previous employer, CommunicateHealth, did several collaging studies to understand patient-provider relationships. http://communicatehealth.com/2012/07/collaging-for-health/

image “This is how I feel: free, full of energy and I want my doctors to understand that this is how I want to still feel with their help, even if I don’t look like this.”

What if there was a way for providers to prompt patients to create simple collages? They could just be images and text. Images could be pulled from public domain/creative commons on Flickr (but semi-curated, starting with maybe 20-30 good ones), or uploaded by user. There could also be an option to use a color/pattern background. Part of the key would be to have the right prompts/questions.

I like this idea. Visual communication has been really effective for me personally in past engagements with therapists, etc.

A good point of reference for a mature mobile application would be Mixel, which was designed by Khoi Vinh, formerly of the New York Times.

I was immediately thinking Heydey (turns your photos into a journal that you can input text into, nice interface) or just Pinterest since people already know how to use it and you can easily input both your own photos and images that represent your social determinents. I'm proud to say I ended my Pinterest addiction after my wedding though, so no idea how easy it is to create anonymous collages or private groups these days...
