UAA indoor Google Maps for finding classrooms and buildings #14

It is difficult to find the UAA buildings in Google Maps, you usually have to download a non-mobile friendly PDF and scan through the names in small print. And then often finding the room itself is difficult.

Brian a student at UAA is working on a project to provide indoor navigation. We might be able to collaborate with him or offer him advice. The connection was through Lance. Here is his e-mail: Brendan,

The project we are looking at is applying the floorplans for the UAA campus and all surrounding UAA buildings to Google Maps so that students can use it to find classrooms on campus and have the application guide them to it. Another feature we are looking at is to use a database (that will pull information from UAA's) integrated with Google Maps to help students look up all their classes and map their day.

The purpose of this project is to replace the current PDF map and outdated Google Map on UAA's site. This will greatly help new students as well as those who do not visit the campus that often.

Any advice you can give on the subject would be immensely helpful.

Thank you,

Brian bwsmith@alaska.edu

I'm the lead web/applications developer at UAA, and I worked with Brian and Kyle as they developed this project over the semester. There is still more that we'd like to do, but overall we're very happy with what they built. You can get the location/directions for a specific building. If you're a UAA student currently enrolled in classes, you can login and see all of your class locations plotted out on the map.

The application can be found here: uaa.alaska.edu/map
