I think we might want to go short and simple. I still recommend the city-based approach to naming, as opposed to having a domain with subs - open to opposing views, though. Starter ideas:
Do we want our branding to be 'tech' or 'innovation'? I would lean towards 'innovation' in messaging, but I don't like how 'innovation' looks in domain names:
innovateboston.org bostoncivicinnovation.org
Perhaps we don't include either.
civicevents.boston events.civic.boston civic.boston
Wait, so.. .boston is a tld we can play with? Can we .boston all the things? (Not saying we should, but can we?)
There's something about civictech.boston that's speaking to me right now.
BUY THEM ALL! ALL OF THEM! BUY THEM!
Also, consider the email Chris Osgood sent back to us Friday:
Great issue to raise.
I wonder, if in addition to the calendar, you create a google group that civic tech event organizers use (1) to check dates before they are put on the calendar or (2) to make event organizers know when something is going on the calendar.
Whatever this domain / application is, it may actually be the start of something a bit larger than just a cal - do we want to encapsulate that here or no?
Let's document this as a future iteration possibility and hold off until we've gotten feedback from the ecosystem. I don't want to go off and create all sorts of assets (that then need to be managed) to then discover there may be something out there already that's being underutilized that would fit this purpose. This would be a great discussion for citycamp actually.
Creating a new issue for this.
This does make me wonder if instead of focusing on the object we're creating in the url, maybe we focus on the organizers. Something like.. I don't know.. civicorganizers.boston?
I don't even know how to narrow down our options anymore.
@beechnut: Might you be available later this evening for a chat about this issue?
I'm mostly concerned that someone else will see our idea, snap up a catchy domain, and beat us to it.
I'd like to have this closed by Sunday, if not today. Attn: @CaptainCalliope
